29.05.2020 - Dystopia porn. Black lives matter.

Big week. Wow.

I’m noting things here to keep track more than to craft a good piece of writing, so apologies if it’s a bit clunky. I’m also going to try and keep it short.

I spent the last few days working on a piece which partly drew from this blog and have been speaking to the editor of a small magazine who are interested in publishing it. It was a lot of work, but I’m proud of it, got the gubbins of the idea out, re drafted it a few times, and I hope made it into a coherent, entertaining thought. If it does end up in the magazine it will be my first published piece of work so I’m very excited. I wrote it under my real name so I won’t link it here yet, because at the moment I’m still keeping this blog anonymous. But you might know me, in which case you may have seen the piece.

So shit, yeah. Fuck.

America is really burning now. There’s big riots in Minneapolis because the police killed another black man. The officer just kneeled on his neck till he died while the other copper stood and stared. They absolutely could have cuffed him. I’ve seen a bit of the video but I can’t watch the whole thing, I’ve seen it too many times already. It’s disgusting, and I’m not sure what the value of me watching it would be, if it keeps happening anyway. I’m not sure when, but there’s a point it becomes like weird dystopia porn. There’s even maybe a touch of glee in watching how fucked up it is, and I don’t want to participate in that.

These riots look different from the Ferguson ones which took place a few years ago. The whole city looks like it’s burning. They even arrested a CNN reporter live on TV for no reason. He was a black man and I wonder if that had something to do with it.

100,000 dead from covid, 25% unemployment and disgusting, violent racism. It was obvious America was going to get nasty, I should say nastier, but I didn’t think this soon.

I can’t work out the moral justification for condemning the riots. What else could the people there do? Violence is wrong, and it’s terrible that all they can do is trash their own city, but I can’t see what else they could do. There’s an argument that it is self defence, innocent people keep being murdered by police, would you say violent resistance to Apartheid was wrong? What about the Warsaw Uprising? Yes, that’s an extreme comparison but you have to admit there are parallels. Peaceful protests aren’t working.

I also wonder, if people can really 'loot' what was stolen from them in the first place. When they were stolen. When a whole country was built on their suffering and they have never been repaid. To this day are abused like slaves. What else can you call while police killing black people with impunity? As if they're not even human but objects, so civilised laws don't apply. 

There’s a point where people have to take back what’s their’s, when it would be immoral not to riot. I say this as someone who lives the very comfortable life of a white person, who will never need to put my money where my mouth is, nor will I experience racism first hand, I can’t speak for people who do, all I’m saying is I do not blame black people turning to violence after all their other options have been taken away. I don't know if I would have the courage or strength to stand up to oppression the way the black people do.

Meanwhile in the UK, we’ve descended into our own inside out nightmare. Reality is shifting in order to keep the government in place. It’s fucking mental. I won’t go on, because I wrote about it at length in my article. Just enough to say fuck these people. The mask has well and truly slipped and I hope enough people see them for what they are to make a difference.

They are making decisions that will kill a lot more people to protect themselves. I really think there will be an argument for criminal prosecutions at the end of all this.

Helicopters over the last few days have been non stop. Not so many today for some reason and the sirens are picking up again. And that fucker is still washing different cars every day.

There’s more and more graffiti all the time. It’s getting more political too, more desperate and violent.

I walked home late the other night, about 10:30, it was hairy. The streets are empty apart from scary fuckers.

 So this was even before the shit hit the fan, people pay to live here.
